AWESOME

Let me start by saying... AWESOME!! I bought the tickets as a surprise for my boyfriends' b-day. When we walked in, he had no clue who we were seeing until he saw Marc's things on display and sale. He was SO suprised and happy and enjoyed EVERY second of the concert. Marc sounded great, his band was great and I SURE hope he will return to our area as soon as possible because my boyfriend and I will DEFINATELY be there! Thanks for a great night MARC! That was a great bday surprise and I'm glad you played that night!!!

Marc as usual was fantastic.

He played in a suburb of Memphis at a 350 seat theatre. The sound was unbelievable. One thing he had mentioned was that his Korg keyboard had been broken. This is the one he used to play Ghost Train on. Apparently they do not make them anymore and he has been without it for a while. It was repaired and he said it had been far too long since he played this song. Nice treat.

He played for a little over 90 minutes. Then came out after the show and signed CDs and took photos with fans.

Thanks Marc, great show!!

Inspired to write

Rarely have I ever taken the time to write a review of a concert I've attended. I'm not poetic or prolific, but this was a great concert.

I appreciated that Mark brought his sense of humor to the show, and left his politics behind, which so few artists I've seen recently have done.

This show was sans drummer, so it was only vocals, piano/keyboard and strings. What a wonderful way to experience Mark's voice and hear the stories he sung in such a wonderful way. He and the band made you an emotional part of the performance.

A truly great show. I hope he comes back to Maine.

This was the first time my husband and I had seen Marc in person. What a wonderful performance!

The band was without their drummer and we hardly noticed. Marc, we agree that drummers overrated anyway!

Thank you so much for coming all the way to Brownfield, and we're looking forward to seeing you when you return next year.

Fabulous performance on a sad anniversary

This was my first live concert, although I've been a huge fan of Marc's since his first album.

After reading previous posts, I wasn't sure if my expectations were too high but Marc and crew exceeded them handily! I never realized how funny he is, especially in bantering with the audience. At one point, as he explained what "Listening to Levon" was about, he jokingly said, "now that the intro is longer than the whole song, I'd better get started!"

This night was the third anniversary of Katrina, and with a new hurricane bearing down on NOLA, his songs from "Join the Parade" were especially poignant, particularly "The Calling" and "Dance Back From the Grave". He played a fabulous version of "Girl of Mysterious Sorrow" and his live versions of "Walking in Memphis", "Paper Walls" and "29 Ways" were huge crowd pleasers.

He also ended with a double of "Things We've Handed Down" and "True Companion", after the crowd wouldn't let him leave.

He finished the 2 hour set with "Let Me Be Your Witness", dedicated to Maria Vargas because he said that if he didn't Maria would be unhappy with him for only playing True Companion (which he wrote for his first wife!). The other songs he played were: "Live Out the String", "Miles Away", "Healing Hands" & "Perfect Love".

All in all, a magical evening in which Marc seemed to enjoy himself as much as the crowd did!

Passionate performance!

An amazing performer at an amazing venue. An intimate performace was greatly appreciated by all who attended.

Toby Lightman has a tremendous voice and was wonderful on her own and even more powerfull and soulful with her backup vocals for Marc Cohn. Backed up by a very tight band of talented musicians, the show is one not to be missed.

Laughter, tears, it has it all. He played old and new, satifying his creative needs to show off his fine new album while comforting those looking for his more well known efforts. If you haven't seen this show, you have missed out on one of our generations truly great talents.

Thank you Marc for sharing your incredible voice and abilities with us!

Tears of Joy

Let me quickly say that this was an amazing show and Marc literally brought me to tears several times.

The band is hot, hot, hot. Marc's voice was in excellent form (sort of an ecletic Mark Knopfler/Counting Crows vibe). Spiritual, smart and funny. The intimate setting of the Westbury Music Fair is an awesome venue to see Marc Cohn.

If he's in your town....run to see him!

AMAZING

This evening was in a beautiful setting of a landmark building with incredible acoustics.

Marc and Shane performed 16 songs and did 3 or 4 encores. Staten Island was truly blessed tonight, and then Marc and Shane signed autographs.

The concert started with "Living Out the String" followed by "Ghost Train," "Perfect Love," "Join the Parade," "The Calling," "Dance Back from the Grave," "29 Ways," "Listening to Levon," "The Rainy Season," "Walking in Memphis" and concluded with "Miles Away." The encores included "Silver Thunderbird," "Paper Walls," Let Me Be Your Witness," "True Companion" and "One Safe Place." WOW!!

Staten Islanders need to stand and dance more because Marc and Shane brought the house down. AMAZING and Thank You.

Thanks for coming to Indy!

I gave tickets to my brother and five friends. We had a GREAT evening! I have to quote my friend, Mark, who emailed me this note the next day. "You know it just proves when you get a consummate musician with a world of experience, the level of professionalism is unparalleled. He was awesome." I can't say it better.

Thank you, and the band, for sharing your gift of music with your fans.

Fabulous Concert

Fan-tanstic performance last night at the Music Mill, Indianapolis. I've been to a lot of good concerts and Marc's show is one of the best.

The combination of Marc's soulful songs played to perfection, his story telling and connection with audience made for a very entertaining and unforgettable night. By the ways his band was awesome too.

If you get the chance to see his show, don't pass on the opportunity.

Hurry back!

Where does one begin?

The sheer, raw anticipation to attend this show had gnawed at me ever since I saw the obscure ad in the local entertainment magazine. Finally, the night of the show arrived and all I can say is that it was worth the wait!

The entire concert from start to finish was indeed a validation of the wonderous joy that I've felt countless times when listening to Marc on his recorded efforts...as few and far between as they were. To finally see him in person and listen to the cohesion of his tremendous band, to feel the passion in his voice and to revel in the moments he created on that stage were truly worth every penny.

The new CD is getting better (to me) with each listen. Hearing those new songs live made it that much more special. And the "old" stuff...oh my! It was just a fantastic evening spent in a time capsule of a talented man and his music.

I told a friend after the show about how back in the day we would come out of nearly every concert we saw and proclaim it as "the best I ever saw". Well, time, wisdom and reason has taken hold, and now I can honestly say that on this night in Indianapolis, the show that Marc Cohn put on was unrivaled in it's totally cool vibe, the response from the crowd and it's effect on me. Over a month later, I still listen to the 2 live CD's I purchased that night (that he graciously signed after the show) and I cannot imagine I will get to see a similar show again anytime soon...unless he wants to pay us a visit again soon! Hope so.

Thanks Marc, for a night to remember. May you continue to pursue your dream of making music and to spread your visions among the masses of folks who admire your work. I am fortunate to count myself as one of your fans.

Best always.

One of the Best Performances I've Ever Seen

Just a great performance that I had been wanting to see for years. I really enjoyed every song and could tell Marc was enjoying himself. My wife attended the performance with me and also became evan a bigger Marc Cohn fan after seeing this concert. I hope you will be back soon to the Indy area.

Best Ever

I loved Marc's breakthrough album. This spring I went to Memphis twice and the words of his signature song rang SO true. I had to see him in Indy! Was not disappointed. In fact, I have told everyone who will listen, that it was simply, musically, the finest concert I have ever attended in my 37 years of attending concerts. Kudos to Marc and the entire band. Wow.

Great live performance

I had the opportunity to attend Marc's recent performance in Columbia, Missouri - where I attended college quite a few years ago. I was happy to get the chance to see him, I've been a fan for many years.

The best part about his show was his interaction with the audience and the band members. It was a small venue, but it was his interaction with the audience that helped it feel like a private performance.

I especially enjoyed how he put personal touches on songs like "Walking in Memphis" and "Listening to Levon". The show was terrific and I really hope he decides to visit my current hometown of St. Louis sometime in the near future.

Don't Miss Concert

Marc Cohn was great in Kansas City and the small but enthusiastic crowd appreciated every minute and every song. The band was really on target and Shawn Fontayne was phenomenal on guitar. There was a great mix of old and new songs and all of them were classic Marc Cohn.

There is no equal for this generous and gracious performer who waited after the concert to meet, greet and sign autographs for any fan who wanted to wait.
He's as real and down to earth as his songs which have to hit home to all his fans.

Kansas City Crossroads

The weather was steaming hot in Kansas City, but not nearly as hot as Marc and his band.

I attended with my wife and 21 and 23 year old sons. The evening just blew us all away. Marc and the band had never played in KC and gave just a tremendous, inspired show.

Set list was similar to others I have read, but we did get a cool presentation of "Ghost Train", which Marc said he usually didn't play with the right keyboard, we got the piano version and it was delicious.

My wife, sons, and I all danced together in some kind of odd 4 person group hug to "True Companion", truly a life highlight. We all had misty eyes. My sons were blown away by Shane Fontane. Seeing him live adds an element to the Marc Cohn experience that adds a new dimension to listening to Marc's music. What the band does is magical, mystical, and dare I say spiritual.

When Marc sang "tell me are you a Christian child" we sang man we are tonight! It was a special evening.

Thanks to Marc from our family for a special night. Can't wait to see you again!!!

GOOD FRIDAY STORM IN KC

Around dusk, on July 25th, the oppressive heat and humidity of summer in the Midwest wilted when the cool breeze of excellent crafted song writing and band chemistry musicianship rained a monsoon of emotion upon the faithful crowd assembled at the urban, salvage yard-ish Crossroads venue, in downtown Kansas City.

Towering cumulus lyrics colliding with rich cirrus melodies, prompted lightning bolts of musical soul from Marc Cohn, and band members, Shane Fontayne, Jon Ossman and Joe Bonadillo. The powerful front, including intimate banter between Marc and the sparse, but enthusiastic audience, brought two hours of relief to the ears of those suffering under the current drought stricken singer songwriter music scene.

As a singer/songwriter, with 18 Contemporary Christian recordings on my bio, and a minister of the gospel, it was a night to attend church the way I wish it were done. Marc's last name means "Priest" and in my humble opinion, he is one of the true priests of real music.

In a world chained to mediocrity of reality shows and compromised sensationalism, Marc's songs bring deliverance to those exiled in the cultural "Valley of The Kings."  As one who has "ears to hear," I find solace from the musical parables flowing from Marc's street level pulpit.

After the show, I had a chance to meet and talk with the personable and witty Priest. Not only did he give me his Live 04-05 CD and accommodate a photo op, but he also took the time to leave a warm and funny message on my daughter Jessica's cell phone congratulating her on one year marriage anniversary to a "good Jewish boy." My daughter and I danced to "The Things We've Handed Down" the previous summer at their interfaith ceremony in KC. Praise God for the "Rainy Season" falling on Kansas City last Friday night.

It was a Good Friday that certainly doesn't rival the Good Friday that has shaped the journey of my faith for the last 38 years, but be assured, it was a gospel (good news) that everyone on planet earth should have the opportunity to hear.

March on Marc and Band, I'm glad to be in the parade of grace with you. Keep proclaiming the message of life lived from the heart!

Another great show! Great performances from Marc and the entire band... even though he was eating bugs under the lights he marched on! The playful banter with the crowd was hysterical. and hence forth July 22nd & 23rd will be known as Marc Cohn days!

Thanks Marc - I am still walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale today!

Thank You for Coming To Bismarck

It was truly an honor to have Marc Cohn and his band come to Bismarck North Dakota. I've been a fan for a long time and their performance was beyond magnificent. The warm, personal exchange Marc had with the audience, it was as if we were all old friends gathered for an intimate evening of fun and friendly bsnter.

And magical it was....Soulful, spiritual, exhilerating. To hear the stories behind the music, it made the songs even more meaningful. "Live Out the String", What an inspiring song!!!

It cannot go unsaid what a delight it was to see Shane Fontayne perform. He is a truly amazing musician.

It was the best concert I've ever been to in my life. Thank you Marc Cohn, we are so glad you are in this world!!!!!

Hope you come back to Bismarck someday...

Tuesday in the Park with Marc

Sixty miles south of my home, Marc & Company set stage to play their songs at the lovely Stewart Park (Roseburg, Oregon) with the flowing waters of the Umpqua River as their back-drop. Not since Marc had opened for Vonda Sheppard had I been so surprised as to see Marc & Company opening for Aimee Mann! They opened with "Live Out the String" and nine songs later they closed with "Paper Walls". (see set list below.) The concert was short 'n sweet. Understanding that this was a FREE CONCERT (!) in a park, most of the audience were not huge fans of his music and my guess is it was more of a summer event than a music concert. I've seen Cohn well over a dozen times and this was not a concert for the record books. It was simply a sweet show of songs in the park with Marc. Yet there was one unforgettable moment that I've never seen before. Just as Marc was singing "Walking in Memphis", a boy with his fishing pole was walking through the crowd with his fishing pole and - yes - I kid you not: a caught catfish in his hand from the Umpqua River ----- and Marc's singing "There's catfish on the table. And there's gospel in the air" !(Tonight it was "catfish in the air.") Ya gotta love the synchronicity! Here's the set list: 1) Live Out The String, 2) The Calling, 3) Move Real Easy, 4)Dance Back From The Grave, 5) 29 Ways, 6) Listening To Levon, 7) She's Becoming Gold, 8) Walking With A Catfish, 9) Miles Away, and (encore) 10) Paper Walls

Marc Climbs the Mountain, Swims the Sea

Marc held the audience captive throughout his show, not only when he was singing, playing guitar or piano, but when he related to the crowd with his heartfelt stories and smooth, engaging wit to introduce or follow up his music - which only magnified the elements of a beautiful evening in the new, if not improved, Mountain Winery. Although the new venue may have compromised some intimacy, his performance most certainly did not. Everyone who was at the show had a "True Companion."

Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know

Raw energy and spontaneity rocked the Lobero on June 15 in Santa Barbara. Dispensing with a set list, Marc frequently turned to Shane with a, "What next?" He also obliged audience requests and played "Old Soldier," "Dance Back from the Grave," "True Companion" and "My Sanctuary" (one of my favorites). Besides the requests, one of my favorite moments of the show was during "The Calling" when Marc and Shane engaged in an acoustic guitar duel/duet that nearly brought the house down! Not to mention the joy of Marc's savory vocals tempered with Shane's sweet harmonies. And behind it all the rhythm section drove everything along with locomotive intensity. Something special was happening that night, and I am grateful to have been a part of it. Thank you Marc, Shane, Jon and Joe.

June 12, 2008 - DeepRockDrive.com

Marc Cohn free online concert at DeepRockDrive.com

The family members were under strict instructions not to bother me while I was watching the concert. Every one of my family members thought I was a little psycho.

And maybe I am. *shrug* The "doors" of the DeepRockDrive.com concert opened at 6:30 p.m., and me being the big Marc Cohn nerd I am, I clicked the "Join the Show" button immediately like I was fighting for a front row seat at a general admission show.

The first thing I did was to familiarize myself with the page's setup and interactive features. It was good to have some "dead" time to figure it all out without looking like a total dork during his show.though I probably wouldn't care. Okay, definitely wouldn't.

After familiarizing myself with all the features, I set my camera to Marc's piano and planned on keeping it there until the band got going. Good thing, too. A really cute kid (okay, he was probably in his 20s) sat at Marc's piano so they could aim the stationary camera at him. I sent a shout out saying something about it and the kid turned red. Heh.

At this point, they didn't have the live sound turned on they were only setting up the cameras. There were no numbers available to see how many people caught Marc's concerts, but based on comments alone, there were tons. I noted people from 11 countries and 34 different states! This doesn't include those folks who weren't chatting.

At 6:55 p.m., Marc sat down at his piano. The sounds still wasn't live, but I sent a comment that said: "I wonder what Marc sees on his end. It must be a lot to deal with!" I saw Marc mouth the words to my comment, then he had the camera turn around so I could see what he saw! I squealed with giddiness. It was a giant wall of TV screens! It appeared as though 4-6 comments would post at the same time on several of the screens, so I was able to see some of the comments that had been made a few seconds prior.

It appeared that the lag time at the beginning was short (like 5-7 seconds or so), but most people weren't making any chatter, so it was easy to get through. As the show went on, more and more people joined in on the chatting and I noticed the lag time got longer and longer (like 20-30 seconds). After getting to see what Marc saw, a quick tutorial video (maybe 1:30) appeared on our screen to familiarize us with the features. *eyeroll* I'd already done this, so like in high school, I didn't pay any further attention to it. Once it was over, they launched another video (maybe 3:30 or so) that was Marc and the band doing sound check earlier today. It was cool to be able to watch this part, since usually we're unable to witness what goes into getting the concert ready. Once the two videos were done, we went live to Marc, who explained to us that they were on a sound stage with only the stagehands, camera operators and other behind the scene folks as a "live audience".

I was a little surprised to see that the band was pretty stripped down. There was Marc (of course) on piano and acoustic guitar (depending on the song), trusty Shane Fontayne on lead guitar, acoustic guitar and harmonica (!!), Jon Ossman on upright bass and Joe Bonadillo on drums. That's it. Just four of 'em. While it was a small group, they ended up putting out a hell of a good sound!

The first song I voted for was "29 Ways". Unfortunately, this wasn't chosen until the seventh song, so it remained my "vote" through the first 6 selections. The first song Marc played was "Live Out the String" from his newest album. Every time I hear him perform this song, I like it a little more. This time was no exception. This version was similar to the studio version on the record, but it seemed stronger somehow. The vocals were surer and the vibe was more solid. Not that they sucked at all before, they were just different. Like he wasn't as certain of the song or something. I dunno.

After the first song was over, I clicked the clap button a million times. Marc's first comment was: "Hi Heather, how are you doin'?" (No, he didn't sound like Joey from Friends, either.) I was stoked! While I really loved the personal interaction, I really missed the real interaction that the audience has with Marc in real time. Marc feeds off the audience in his live concerts and this one seemed more like he was a performing circus monkey, moving from song to song in a huge hurry to meet some timed deadline. I don't know if this is because they really were under a deadline or if he just wasn't into the "live" virtual audience, which only "appeared" on those TV screens. I suspect because he's a musician, he's a highly auditory person and this type of concert wasn't terribly fulfilling for him. Moving on.

The next song that was voted in was "Walking in Memphis". Marc said he wasn't surprised. Neither was I, since several people commented that this was the only song of his on the list that they knew. *sigh* This version ROCKED! It's hard to describe what he did to it, but he had a little of everything thrown into it: blues, rock, jazz.you name it, it was there. (Well, except for country and rap. Heh.) During the "Muriel" portion, it was just Marc and his piano playing the sweetest tribute to her. I've heard him do this part like this before.and I dig it. After the song was over, I commented: "My family thinks I'm acting a little like an idiot. Heh. I'm making lots of noise!" Marc started to read it, but it disappeared from his screen before he finished it and he said, "Too late." Bummer. He only got to "idiot".which I guess is fitting enough. *wink*

He then went into "Listening to Levon" which was slowed down from the studio version. After "Listening to Levon", Marc stated that the next one he'd play was just in time for Father's Day - "Silver Thunderbird", which is one of a few songs he wrote about his dad. This particular version was very sweet.

The next song was "Strangers in a Car", which I've always loved.and always wondered about. He filled us in. He said he used to write until 3 or 4 in the morning and sleep in the afternoons. He'd had a nightmare about a kidnapping and when he woke up, he wrote about it in this song. I've always wondered.and now I know. Very cool.

FINALLY, "29 Ways" won the vote. Marc stood up from his piano to take center stage. Once Marc was properly placed, Joe started beating a heavy and almost tribal drumbeat. I was already bouncing in my computer chair. Yes, I was chair dancing. Big time. The song had an old rock and roll groove that was totally killer.and of course Shane got his usual solo time in the middle. He didn't disappoint. It was a completely energizing song for Marc, the band AND the audience.

Since "29 Ways" was finally played, I got to vote for another song and the next one I voted for was "Paper Walls" and I was thrilled when it won for the next song played. Two kick ass songs in a row!! He played the song slower (which seemed to be an overall theme tonight) and more haunting. I got to vote again and chose "The Things We've Handed Down" but that wasn't next. Like usual. *sigh* When the song was over, Marc was obviously in a talkative mood. Someone asked him who his favorite songwriters were. Marc complained that there were about 10, then listed: "Dylan, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Al Green, Robbie Robinson" and then said that was a bunch of them. He went on to complain about having to play this concert in the middle of the desert, so I sent a message that said: "They don't have AC there?" Marc laughed, then read my comment aloud. He replied with: "Yes, they have AC I'm just a hot guy." Heh. I would've agreed with him, but he moved on to get ready to play "Miles Away".

He explained that he'd written the song while traveling on a plane. Another little nugget of information I was unaware of. While this isn't one of my most favorite Marc tunes, he rocked the vocals on it tonight! And in the middle, Shane blew me away with his harmonica solo! It was unbelievably cool!

"The Things We've Handed Down" was played next with just Marc and Shane. It, like always, was beautiful. *sniffle* I chose "Girl of Mysterious Sorrow" as my next choice, but it was never played. *huff* Instead, he played "One Safe Place" next and explained that he'd written the song for the movie The Upside of Anger, but that it had a life of its own and ended up on his fourth studio album. It suited me fine. I love the song.

The final song was the encore selection, which was "Let Me Be Your Witness". Marc (and all of us viewers) felt like the concert had gone too quickly. (Maybe because it had!) He dedicated the song to his wife, Elizabeth Vargas. While he was playing, everyone crawled out of the woodwork and started posting thank yous and pleas for more encores but I knew there wouldn't be another one. And I, sadly, was correct.

Once it was all done, Marc read some of the comments out loud and stated he wasn't sure if he was still on. I told him he was.and heard him read it aloud not long before they cut us all off from him for the evening. The time was 8:10 p.m. It had been a terrific hour and a half.

February 16, 2008 - Bearsville

Come back to Bearsville

I suprised my girlfriend who is a long time fan with the tickets. We drove from L.I., New York. Saw Shane order chinese food at the cafe. Didn't know it was him, but had a feeling he was with the band, little did we know! Met the gent who came all the way from England right before the show. He had mentioned how it would be a miracle if Marc played "True Companion," and with the first few notes, my girl and I knew the miracle was happening. What a special treat on top of an already unbelievably great show.

Everyone played and sang exquisitly. So nice to see such great performers in such a intimate venue. Marc was so generous in speaking of the background to many of his songs. And, as Marc said, he sang like he didn't have a gig tommorrow!

May you continue to have gigs for a long time, can't wait to catch the next one.

"You can put your IPod in now, it's OK" :-)

...says Marc Cohn to the man in the back, who asks him (in good humor) to skip the intro and play the song.

The last concert of the tour, in Woodstock, must have held a little extra magic and although Levon Helm couldn't make it to the show, I bet it'll be memorable for Marc due to all the happy heckling that went on. He called it the "Oprah Winfrey show".

Touching for everyone were the guys who came out from Newcastle, England, just to hear him play. And they knew why. Marc Cohn seems meant to play music for a live audience. He gives so much, his heart is felt and heard in every note and the same is true for his musicians. They've created a solid unit, like a web of magic that pulls you in and puts the stars in your eyes.

Everyone seems connected in this show, audience and musicians alike. This is not a foot tapping show, this was for me a whole body experience of entering music. The sound was great, sharp and exciting. Marc played for two hours and gave three encores - "Paper Walls" (which blew me away), "Witness" (ohh, how the man can purr!) and, upon request, the song from the film The Upside of Anger in a quietly stirring rendition with Shayne. Another great request came from the Newcastle guys: "Old Soldier".

The bottom line is: please turn this show into a live CD! The magic is just contagious.

February 14 - South Orange, NJ

It may have taken me 17 years to finally see Marc in concert for the first time, but now I have seen him twice in the space of four weeks - in Atlanta, GA and South Orange, NJ.

To those of you who have been listening to Marc's music as long as I have, it will come as no surprise that my expectations were comfortably exceeded. The two concerts rank among the most special I have had the privilege of attending, and I have been to quite a few.

From the opening "Live out the String" to the close - a cover of Van Morrison's "Crazy Love," with his son Max on drums, I literally couldn't sit down. My seat was at the back of the venue, I wasn't blocking anyone's view - so I stood. And sang. Pretty much every word of every song. And watched as a man who is clearly enjoying his new lease on life after the Denver incident.

His band, as other reviewers have said, are clearly enjoying this as much as Marc, and believe me when I say this transmits to the audience. These two concerts have been all about the music. And such music. I have listened to Marc since my early twenties, and his music has become an extended part of my family, from reminding me of my father in "Rest for the Weary" to my sister in "The Things We've Handed Down" - pretty much every song has come to have some special meaning.

It was also a great moment to see how much it meant to Marc to be able to play with his son Max: when I approached him after the show, I told him a story about my own four-year old son. He'd been sitting in the car the week before the concert when "Listening to Levon" came on: and he said immediately, "Daddy, that's Marc Cohn". Marc's eyes lit up when I related this. I think that says it all about him.

Keep writing, Marc. We're counting on listening to you for many more years yet.

 Like a fine wine...

When I first heard Marc Cohn's CD back in 1992, I felt like I had "discovered" a great new artist. I was the wise old age of 22 at that time. Fond memories of drinking beers with my friends in our New York apartment, and before we headed out for a night on the town, we all belted out "Walking in Memphis" ..."M'am I am tonight!" Everyone seemed to be a little better mood after singing it as we marched out the door to meet the NYC night.

Last night's performance built a bridge to those fond memories as I got to experience Marc Cohn live for the first time, with my beautiful wife by my side and my two little angels in bed at home. Marc's voice has always been special, but his humor and banter is a great reason to see him live. What's crazy is that as powerfully soulful as Marc's voice is, you couldn't help but feel he could still let it rip even more.

The list of things that moved me during the concert was long, but a few things stand out...singing "The Things We've Handed Down" to his son, Max (I had never heard it before, beautiful)...seeing the smile on his face after jamming on the last song with his son on drums...telling the story behind Muriel.

A most sincere thanks for a very special night.

Amazing Grace

It's 12:37 a.m. and I am high on Marc's music and energy, and the band's incredible talent. This marks the 10th time that I have attended one of Marc's concerts and each one surpasses the last. I don't know what can be said, that hasn't been said already, but the man is a musical and comedic genius. Tonight, along with the incredible guitar and piano playing, we were entertained by Marc's wit - most of which was directed at Matt Lauer. I wish I had the concert and the improv on tape. As always, I will be hearing this concert in my memory days from now, the high will slowly subside, but the sense of well-being that Marc's music generates will last a while longer. If you have not had the extreme pleasure of being in the presence of Marc, the band, and their amazing grace, treat yourself to the experience as soon as you can. As wonderful as Marc sounds on CD, his life performances are incomparable.

First time

I'll be brief: Great venue, great opener, great headliner, great band, and great show! It was the first time my wife and I saw Marc and we were not disappointed. The high point of the show (that would be the whole show actually) was when Marc did True Companion which moves/moved my wife to tears (and me) and to be acknowledged by Marc. Truly touching. Come back soon, maybe somewhere in the Knoxville TN area.

29 ways to get to a Marc Cohn concert

We (wife & I) went to see Marc Cohn at the McGlohen Theater on 1/17/08. We were expecting a good show but were treated to a fabulous live performance. Maybe the best I've ever been to. We have recommended the show to family and friends. I was pleasantly surprised with how long Marc keeps playing. He could have left an hour early and I would have been happy. The fact that he stayed and wants you to get involved and really "feel" his music is awesome. Also, as a side note the band including Amy Corriea is amazingly talented and it does show. Thank you and I can't wait to see him again.

My friend, welcome back!

Marc's bluzy jazz backed music has always been a favorite. Had never seen Marc live and was looking forward to a great concert. The venue is perfect for a Marc Cohn concert and Marc and THE BAND delivered! Marc's interaction with the audience makes the concert very special, as though he is performing in your living room. The new songs are great but “Walking in Memphis” is AGAIN my NEW favorite after Marc the story teller explained the basis of the song - thanks and welcome back!

Love Ya Marc!

This was a night to remember for my husband and myself.

The theatre was the McGlohen in Charlotte NC. An old church that had been converted to a intimate concert venue. We were lucky enough to have third row seats directly in front of Marc. However there wasn't a bad seat in the house...or shall I say church.

Marc opened with “Live Out the String”. What an awesome soulful song that really makes you grateful to be alive!

The banter between Marc, the band and the "Cohn Heads" truly made you feel like you were among friends. There was one particular guy who kept yelling out "I Love you Marc" Which happened throughout the night. This was so comical as Marc always answered him back! Truth be told, I think anyone who dosn't "love" this incredible musician is missing out on something very special!

Marc shared many stories about how his songs came to life. It really makes you listen to the song in a new way once you learn the story behind the lyrics.

We were some of the very fortunate ones to hear the favorite "True Companion" I know Marc doesn't sing this very often for obvious reasons but what a gift for those of us who hold it near and dear to our hearts. I can say that without a doubt Marc's new album has really been worth the wait. The songs have so much emotion and heart and when he performs them you feel like you have been given a gift. At the end of the concert we had the honor of meeting Marc and Shane.

Marc signed his CD and talked to us for a bit. Everyone got the same attention and felt truly important. Perhaps that is the mystery of this man...his songs invite you into his life and make you feel a part of it. He deserves so much more recognition as a musician than he gets, but selfishly I want to keep him playing in the small intimate venues.

This was the second time we have seen him and he just gets better with age...not unlike a fine wine. Marc...Thanks and keep the music coming.

Wow! Much more than I could have ever expected. What a delightful night, the evening was a birthday gift to me from my son, a great musician in his own right; he is a fan of marc also. So that proves quality music appeals to all generations. The new album is a delight and well worth the wait!

In my top 5 concerts of all time

I was really looking forward to this show; Marc's debut CD has been one of my favorites for years, and I've wondered what Marc's been up to, and when he was going to get back out on the road. I've got to say, that in the first minute I was riveted, and just felt really really HAPPY, to be there to hear this wonderful music, and to see someone who loves his life's passion just DOING it. The same goes for the band-it is instantly obvious that they love this man and his music, and love playing together. And the music-it's rich, it's tight, and there is a depth of feeling in each song. I was so excited and grateful to have been there to hear Marc's comeback tour, and look forward to seeing and hearing him again. I hope it will be soon!

December 10, 2007 - Tuscon, AZ

It was a rainy night in the desert when Marc Cohn came into town. But that sure didn't stop him from putting on an incredible show.

I saw Marc perform several years ago in Minneapolis, MN, but this show far exceeded the last one. I was fortunate enough to have a seat in the front row; even though I'm sure those sitting in the farthest seat back felt Mr. Cohn's soul just as intensely last night.

The show opened with a great performance by Amy Correia, and really got the crowd going.

Marc took the stage around 9:00 and got off to a great start. He played a great collection of new songs mixed with the standard old favorites, each with a special "live" twist that you won't find on any CD.

My favorite part of the show was the between-song banter Marc and his band had with the audience.

Everyone has their own interpretation of his music, but it is especially great when you get to hear about the real meaning behind the songs. There was a great back and forth between the audience and the band calling each other "hot" and the story about how Marc and Elizabeth met (told right before her song, "Let Me Be Your Witness").

It was an incredible show all around. Marc sounded great, the band sounded great (Shane Fontaine was incredible!) and the audience was really into it.

Another added bonus of the evening was Marc out front after the show signing autographs. It was great to be able to shake the man's hand and tell him thank you for a terrific show in person.

This performance was simply amazing, and has set the bar very high for future concerts.

The show was amazing! An incredible mixture of outstanding music, laughs, and intimacy.

It was so great to see Marc and the band up there, glowing, loving every moment of the experience they were sharing with us.

It seemed like the whole audience understood that this was a special live event, a rich special moment in our life to enjoy together. I will remember it for many years to come.

If you haven't seen Marc in concert, get your tickets now. He's amazing.

As a musician/drummer myself it's often difficult for me to enjoy live performances of most bands without a critic in my head noticing things like the too-loud guitarist, the too-fast tempo of a favorite familiar song, the phoned-in performance by the artist who's had to play that hit song a thousand times...

But, oh my God, Marc and his band showed everyone at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater what can happen when gifted, mature musicians come together and pool their talent to deliver perfect, magical performances of one man's original music.

It was remarkable how every musician on stage played with so much sensitivity and heart, making each and every song breathe and groove.

The more-laid-back version of "Ghost Train" just killed me, and the in-your-face trashy/bluesy rendition of "Paper Walls" was a real treat.

Throughout the evening the band backed Marc so perfectly, each musician playing only what needed to be played to enhance a song's mood and feel. This was a "Master Class" performance by musicians, FOR musicians . . . everyone else was just lucky to be there.

Marc was candid and genuine, spontaneous and giving. This was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. Thank you to Marc and his band for the very, very special evening.

What a Performance!

The difference between listening to an artist's recordings and seeing them live was never so dramatic for me as it was on this night. As well as I knew the old songs and had listened to the new CD, I felt that I really got to know Marc as a person after this show. He is so honest and real besides being a terrific musican (along with the whole band).

Two years ago my Mom was close to death and I heard "One Safe Place" for the first time. It meant so much to me and after hearing about Marc's personal brush with death and miraculous recovery I knew that I would not pass up the chance to see him in person.

Starting the show with "Live Out the String" let you know that he was laying his heart right out there for the audience and they responded in kind. His lighthearted banter showed his comfort level on stage yet his deeply person renditions of his songs - the highlight of the performance was "Let Me Be Your Witness" - showed his commitment as an artist. I was very moved. And yes, he came back for three encores and ended with "One Safe Place" which felt like a personal gift to me.

Thank you Marc and band, I can't wait for the next chance to see you in person again.

This was the second performance that my husband and I have seen and it was awesome!!

This concert was a birthday present for me and it was the best...Marc is a truly wonderful performer...so gracious and appreciative of the crowd...you just don't want it to end.

Luckily for us, he returned to the stage 3 times for encores! We could not get enough and cannot wait for Marc to return!

We love you in Portland, Marc!!!

I had asked for Marc's new CD for my birthday after seeing him perform on Ellen Degeneres. I have been a fan for many years and was so excited he was BACK!

I was amazed that instead of just buying me the CD, my husband gave me tickets to see the show in Harrisburg on my birthday. I couldn't have asked for anything better.

When Marc & the band performed "Live Out the String," I cried through the whole performance. The words and music touched me in my core and to this day that is the song I play most often and the loudest!

Thanks for a great song and an unbelievable concert. It was a very personal, small setting and I felt like Marc was one of our buddies...he joked and talked to the audience like old friends. Can you say "sagacious"?

Now I can't wait to see him perform LIVE again. Thanks!

Nourished My Soul

My best friend and I were lucky enough to see Marc in Burlington, VT on the Join the Parade tour. We got to sit in the front row right in between the Microphone and the Piano due to the casual "first come first serve" seating. Marc and the band blew me away. I laughed, cried, and sang my heart out along with him. He asked for requests... to which I yelled "True Companion". To my surprise, he granted my wish and got himself into what he called "Method Acting" in order to effectively sing a song he wrote a long time ago about his now ex-wife. Partly through the song he stopped playing, stopped singing, he had forgotten the lyrics! So, since I had been singing along... I filled him in from the front row on what line was next! He picked up where he left off, after a pause of audience laughter and his slight embarrassment. It was hilarious and it topped off my night. The music was powerful; Marc was soulful, funny and SO incredibly talented. I was able to meet him after the show and get his autograph. He treated me like I was the only person in the room. Marc Cohn's music has been the soundtrack to my life. Thank you Marc for sharing your gift with us!

November 7, 2007 - Toronto, ON

I had the chance to see Marc in concert recently in Toronto thanks to the free tickets I won courtesy of marccohn.net.  Since this was Marc’s first tour stop in Canada in nine years there were many eager fans in the audience (myself included) and Marc did not disappoint.

Marc opened the show with “Live Out The String” off his new album which was a great way to start the evening.  The next song he did was “Girl of Mysterious Sorrow” which was exciting since that was the one song I really wanted to hear that evening.  He then followed that up with “Ghost Train”, and as the very recognizable opening chords were played, the music felt like a warm hug on a cold day and I thought, “Ah yes, I think I would have waited twenty years for this…but I’m really glad I didn’t have to.”

One of the great things about seeing Marc live is that I always come away with a new appreciation for a song I hadn’t really listened to in a while.  The last time I saw him in concert, “Paper Walls” totally blew me away to the point that I listened to it on continuous repeat for almost two weeks after.  It would have gone on for longer if not for the complaints I started receiving.  Apparently, it’s not the most appropriate song for the workplace.  Anyway, this time around the song that I rediscovered was “Miles Away” which fortunately is totally safe for work.

The other thing I love about Marc’s concerts is the song selection.  There’s nothing more frustrating to me than seeing someone in concert who’s put out fifteen albums and you have to sit through a bunch of shuck and jive just to hear the one song you came there to hear.  Since Marc’s song catalog has more quality than quantity, you’re pretty much guaranteed to hear many of your favourites.  The set list had a good mix of the new stuff, as well as the classics (which I guess is anything from his first three albums).  Marc even took requests at one point which he qualified with “anything but ‘True Companion’”.  I’m guessing Marc is hoping this song will die a slow and quiet death, at least in the live setting.  I’m fine with it if it means he might play “From The Station” in its place.   At least that would be my choice if there was some sort of song exchange program.

This was the third Marc Cohn concert I’ve been to and have to say that it was definitely the best concert (Marc Cohn or otherwise) that I’ve been to.  Marc and his band have a really great chemistry and seem to be having a lot of fun playing the music which is contagious.

Although I hope Marc doesn’t wait another nine years to come back to Toronto, I can’t say it wasn’t worth the wait.  If you have the chance to see Marc Cohn live, I suggest you run, don’t walk, to get tickets.  You will not regret it.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! Not only was the music beautiful, soulful and gutsy, Marc himself made me feel like I was sitting in the living room of good friends sharing laughs, tears and life.

"Silver Thunderbird"...great as always.

"If I Were An Angel"...words don't do it justice.

The new stuff is absolutely fabulous.

Thanks Marc for coming out after the show and letting us see your smile and grateful heart.

We saw Marc for the 3rd time in Madison.  We loved the show!  We have all of Marc's CD's and really treasure each one...of course we have our favorites but we enjoy his stories and fantastic melodies.

Marc gave an exhilarating performance, highlighting many of his new songs and humoring us with some old favorites.  We loved seeing Marc on drums...very impressive and fun to watch him make his way all around the stage.

We are true fans and can't wait to see him in these parts again!

Thanks for sharing your stories and your life with us Marc!

See you again soon!

All the best,

October 30, 2007 - St. Paul, MN

I am so excited to be able to submit a review of Marc's St Paul show. My husband and I saw him perform at the Fitzgerald Theater on October 30, 2007, in St Paul, Minnesota. We have seen Marc perform in and around this area close to a dozen times before over the last 15 years. And, this was by far, the best of the best. Marc played a number of tracks off his new cd, Join the Parade. And, he mixed in a good number of older tracks as well. He shared a lot of personal anecdotes between songs that made his already beautiful lyrics, even more poignant. I had never heard the story behind, "Walking in Memphis"....and didn't know that Muriel was a real woman he'd met. So, hearing his memories of that time really allowed me to hear that song with different ears and a new perspective. Same with "Miles Away." That has always been one of my husband's favorites and at the concert, Marc shared some of the frustrations he was feeling when he wrote that song. Then, listening to him perform it, I realized that I had a whole new reaction to it. A deeper understanding.

"Live out the string" is one of the most inspiring and energizing songs I've ever heard from ANY artist. He opened with that  - which seemed highly fitting. Setting the bar high for an amazing evening's worth of musical gifts to his audience.

Afterward, he stayed in the lobby of the Fitz to sign copies of his cd. We waited in a long line and watched as he was personable, intimate and gracious with every single person in line. When it was our turn, he agreed to take a picture with us and he generously autographed my cd with both my name and my daughter's name. He took the time and care to make sure he spelled our names correctly and he looked directly into my eyes when I was telling him what a true honor it was to meet him in person.

It is such a warm and lovely feeling, to have someone you admire, turn out to be everything you envisioned they'd be.

I highly recommend anyone and everyone goes to see Marc perform live. And, goes to purchase his new album, Join the Parade. He is a gifted human being and has really made an imprint on my life.

This was the best concert I have been to in ages. I was overjoyed with how down to earth Marc Cohn was. He had conversations with people in the audience and made you feel at home. He has the ability to captivate an audience and draw them into the songs with him. Yes they were songs you knew but they were even more soulfully sung in person. I'm not sure how many people were there, but I feel as if I were only one of a few in a small pub somewhere. And I was in the balcony! The concert was well worth the three hour drive. Keep up the great work Marc Cohn!!

_______________________

I approached seeing Marc Cohn in concert with some trepidation. Would hearing him live be as good as his albums? What if he altered the arrangements so much that the songs would be unrecognisable? After wanting to see him in concert for so many years, would I be disappointed?

I'm sure many people travel to see Marc. I did too - from Australia.

My brother's wedding was the reason for the trip, but when I found out Marc would be playing a single concert while I was in the US, I changed my travel plans to include Chicago and Crystal Lake.

The venue was intimate, a beautifully restored and maintained theatre. The stage was empty of anything but instruments, there was no need for elaborate sets or fancy lightshows, it was just about the music. And what music!

There was the perfect blend of some of Marc's classics, as well as a showcase of a few of his new tracks. He gave us a sneak peak of Join the Parade, which was due to be released a few days after the concert.

To hear new songs, live before hearing them on an album, was memorable. "Listening to Levon," "Let Me Be Your Witness" and the others were stunning! Not to mention hearing some of the classics, like "Rest for the Weary" and "True Companion," or the rush of anticipation hearing the first few bars of "Walking in Memphis."

Along with the great music, Marc himself was warm, engaging and entertaining, even getting into some banter with people. A few dinner invites were issued from the audience, some for Marc, some for Marc and Shane, one for Shane alone!

Best of all was witnessing the joy Marc so clearly derives from his music and performing.

The concert was a highlight of my trip and I hope it's not the last time I see Marc live. And I really hope I don't have to wait another 10 years for his next album!

Sally C.
