A New Section? Thoughts Please
Since The Lounge seems to be reserved exclusively for music-related discussions, I propose that we add a section where we can kick back, tell (clean) jokes, talk about our hobbies, make happy announcements, post holiday snaps, complain about high taxes, take dumb personality tests (What kind of fruit are you? I’m a pomegranate) - stuff like that. For the sake of privacy, it could be made “members only” and be named The Parade (as in, you have to JOIN - haha). We know a lot about Marc. Maybe Marc would like to know a little bit more about us. (Maybe he will be induced to post a funny joke of his own . . . ) Thoughts?

Kind of like "General Discussion" over at Move Real Easy? Sounds good to me. Not that I'd have much time to spend there, but I think it's always good to have at least one "off topic" section on every board.

I think "General Discussion" equates to "Marc Cohn General Chat" here. For what I am proposing, I do not believe there was an equivalent at MRE. You'd have time to pop in for a quick joke, though, eh? :-)

See, you can't tell me something like THAT doesn't deserve its own section . . .

But I'm sure you know a few good jokes, eh? (elbow, elbow) Don't keep 'em all to yourself.

Re: A New Section? Thoughts Please
I just think that there are a lot of other sites out there that cater to this sort of thing. The Marc forum has never really wanted it, we preferred to keep the discussion to the topic that started it all. Yes, we all wander off, that is to be expected but the Marc forum has stunned, yes, stunned, new people coming to it with its intelligance and sensitivity, and I might add, not following the expected. There has been a great deal of warmth and fond feelings about our forum and it has been going for over a decade with that feeling, and respect for the artist. I know that we can grow here, subtely and organcially, rather than scaring the long time fans away.

As there is a section called "Suggestions," I thought I would suggest something. As we are called a "Fan Community," I thought I'd suggest that we actually "commune." But thank you for sharing your thoughts. This is what I asked for.

Re: A New Section? Thoughts Please
Amanda:It got quiet for a moment. Marc fans are big on roller coaster rides. Not actually but we go from days with nothing to scrambling to get something on, then it takes off again and the ride can get hairy. All it takes is a thread topic, so thanks for setting some.
I contend that Marc Cohn fans are equally interesting, inspiring, intelligent and articulate as Marc and, as such, have the ability to inspire, inform, encourage and comfort just as he does each of us through his wonderful music. By suggesting a new section, my hope was to establish a place where we could do this for each other, but also have some fun. I apologize for trivializing my intent and earning the censure of any of the keepers of the faith. I often use humor because it tends to make people relax and frankly, laughing is a lot better than crying all the time. I apologize for any offense I caused. I love Marc’s music, and I am prepared to embrace, accept and welcome anyone else that does. Thank you for your tolerance, patience and understanding.

Re: A New Section? Thoughts Please
I appreciate your suggestion. Don't feel so bad. It's a good idea. The old forum had headings that seemed very open to general conversation, and you noticed there wasn't anything here stating the same intent. Most of the time, the more general posts over there started with a Cohn observation and then went on from there. We have a lot of the same people here, so I expect that to still happen. In the old forum, there was a string "Us Fans" which was one of my favorites, until spam got it. We copied the info into a new thread just so it was there to read. Here, we do have the option of posting info about ourselves on our profiles, and we could read those things about each other. I haven't done much of that yet, and need to refine my bio a bit, but we do have that opportunity for connection, and we can still e-mail, just in a bit different procedure. And we do all appreciate a laugh! It takes a bit of ingenuity sometimes to tie it to a post about Marc, but it's been done. It's all so new. I'm glad so much work and thought have gone into making these forums, and I'm sure they'll be refined over time. It's a good place.

Re: A New Section? Thoughts Please
I think I agree with Amanda but I would never wish to stop others from making suggestings and I certainly do not think Amanda was doing that. I think the point is there is a lot of new things around here and it takes time getting to know the forum and site. Let's play it by ear and see what happens: I suspect as people here have suggested, most of the discussions come from Marc related items in any event and then we usually go off on a tangent. Makes things all the more interesting.
